The football world is saddened by the news that Sven-Goran Eriksson, a famous former Swedish coach, has passed away peacefully at the age of 76 after battling a long illness.

Eriksson has revealed that he was diagnose with terminal pancreatic cancer and was not expect to live until 2024. He has passed away peacefully at the age of 76, amid the sadness of the football world at the loss of a famous coach.

Eriksson’s family said Monday: “Sven-Goran Eriksson has died after a long illness. He died this morning at home with his family by his side.

“The former Swedish coach has a wealth of managerial experience, most notably his time with England between 2001 and 2006, and is the first foreign coach to be appoint by the Football Association to manage the Three Lions.

Eriksson has coached famous clubs such as Roma, Sampdoria, Lazio, Manchester City, Leicester City, etc. His last achievement was coaching the Philippines national team from 2018-2019.

Eriksson previously coached a charity match UFABET between Liverpool legends and Ajax Amsterdam in March, around two months after announcing his diagnosis with terminal cancer.

FA CEO Mark Bullingham was among the senior figures to express thanks for the Swede’s contribution and said the country will pay tribute during the game against Finland on September 10.

“This is a very sad day,” he said. “He gave all England fans such special memories. No one can ever forget the 5-1 victory in Munich against Germany under Sven’s guidance.

“Sven will be rightly recognise and forever remember for his significant work with the England team, and for his wider contribution to the game.”
